How To Earn A Higher Nurse Practitioner Salary

Why are nurse practitioners considered to be one of the best paid professionals in town? It's because of the nurse practitioner salary amount! Nurse practitioners get paid huge amounts of money because they shoulder the responsibility of taking care of millions of lives, day in and day out.

The current average nurse practitioner salary is $83,293 in North America. However, the salary amount varies from state to state and is also dependent on important factors like qualifications, experience, work credentials, geographic location, and the healthcare company/institution employed.

Why different geographical locations mean different salaries? It because of the demand and supply? In certain states there may be a shortfall of nursing professionals; hence doctors and hospitals there are willing to pay more for a licensed nurse practitioner. One such state is Pennsylvania and it pays almost $78,000 to $80, 000 or more to nurses. Closing following PA is Illinois and New York where the salaries are $76, 000 and $75, 000 respectively. Nurses can also look for work in Texas where the salary is above $75, 000.

States to avoid if you want to be paid more are Florida, Georgia, and Tennessee as these don't have as well paying opportunities are offered by many other states.

If you have entered or are on the threshold of entering the nurse practitioner field, then it's especially important for you to start doing some background work and look at the various licensed nurse practitioner salary levels, both in government and private sectors. There can be a lot of difference in salaries scales of these two sectors. For ex: private franchises may pay $68,000 or less while government may pay $75,000 or so leading to a difference of $7,000 or more.

Also, salaries will vary based on the nursing job profile. Those involved in family practice may earn around $58,000, while those who are physician assistants may earn around $89,000, while those taking care of mentally ill patients can earn $95,000 and nurse practitioner in a correction facility can earn as much as $120,000.

While nurse practitioner salary scales are high, it is expected that these are only going to increase further in the coming years due to high demand and low supply.
