Nursing Degree Requirements

Nursing being a highly rewarding profession-in a greater sense than just monetary-it is not quite surprising that a lot of people are looking at entering into this domain currently. However, if you are planning to do so as well, you need to take a close look at the various nursing degree requirements that you will be needed to possess.

First and foremost, your nursing degree requirement will depend on the kind of nursing career you want to be specialized in. There are many specializations here such as anesthetic nurses, pediatric nurses, cardiac care nurses, oncology nurses, diabetic care nurses and so on. It is most important to decide which field you would like to go in.

Now, to start with your nursing education, you will need certain qualifications first. Most institutions will ask that you have a high school diploma or an equivalent degree. However, people who are still at school can also try to get educated as a nurse if they plan to go through some added education. The subjects that are mainly looked into while considering someone for admission in a nursing educational institution are biology, chemistry, physics and algebra. Having better grades in these subjects at school can alleviate the chances of getting admission in a reputable nursing college.

The courses itself are varied. If you want to become a registered nurse (RN), you will have to ideally appear for a 4 year program for BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) or you will have to first appear for the 2-3 year program known as ADN (Associates' Degree in Nursing) and then apply for a course for being an RN. There is a third route available as well, which is to go to a hospital and learn and work at the same time. This heightens the chances of scoring better in the exams because such nurses have better experience and they are usually absorbed by the very hospital they studied in as employees when they complete their education.

If you don't want to go through all the way to become an RN, you might even decide to take up a short-term program to become a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). These programs are short and the nursing degree requirements are quite simple here, which means it is easier to become an LPN than an RN. Once you have become an LPN, the route to becoming an RN is simpler and that is simplified further if you actually work as a nurse for some period of time before applying for RN course admission.
