Private Nursing Schools - What You Should Check First

If you are looking for private nursing schools then there are several aspects that you need to consider. These aspects are important because you don't want to end up doing the wrong program or a non-accredited program. So where do you begin?

You need to start by identifying the program that you to study at private nursing schools. The type of program you choose will depend on your previous qualification to a great degree. For example: if you are new to nursing then you will need to opt for a LPN (licensed practical nurse) or LVN (licensed vocational nurse) program. If you are already LPN then you need to opt for RN (registered nurse) and if you are already RN then you can opt for BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) or ADN (Associated Degree in Nursing).

Once you have identified your requirement, you need to check for the accreditation of these programs. It is not necessary that nursing programs offered by all private nursing schools are accredited and hence you need to be extremely careful. One of the important things to understand is that each state has its own nursing policy and hence the accreditation can be different. Primarily, there are two major accreditation bodies in the US and they are the National League of Nursing Accreditation Commission and The Commission on Nursing Education (CCNE). If the programs in private nursing schools chosen by you are not accredited by the above bodies then it is better not to opt for those schools.

There are two other aspects that you need to consider while choosing private nursing schools and they are the class size of the nursing schools and the clinical rotation. You need to find out the student-to-faculty ratio in the classroom as well as in clinical instruction. The ideal private nursing schools are those that have a small class size for clinical rotations as well as nursing programs. The second thing is the total amount of clinical rotation time offered by the nursing schools? Is the time enough? Are these private nursing schools offering varied clinical placements? Are they providing hands-on experience? These are some of the most important aspects to check while selecting private nursing schools.
